China’s Robotic Snakes Are Now Crawling Along Power Line

China is turning to robotic snakes to keep a closer eye on power lines, and the idea is as practical as it is futuristic. In Kunming, in southwestern China’s Yunnan province, these robotic inspectors are being used to check electrical infrastructure and help maintain a steady power supply.

The robots move directly along the cables, almost like a real snake, while built-in cameras and sensors look for problems such as broken wires, worn parts, and unusual heat buildup. According to reports, the system can also draw power from the line itself, which allows it to keep working for long periods without frequent interruptions.

What makes this especially useful is that the robots can handle inspections in places where drones face limits, including areas near airport no-fly zones. That makes them a strong fit for sensitive zones where utilities still need regular monitoring but have fewer practical options.

The deployment also reflects a broader shift in China’s power sector, where utilities are increasingly using robots, drones, and other automated systems to inspect and maintain infrastructure.

For power companies, this can bring to fewer dangerous climbs, faster fault detection, and more reliable service. For everyone else, it is another sign that robotics is moving well beyond factories and into the everyday systems that keep cities running.
